Holidays are part of the calendar. Students feel happy when they hear holidays probably because they can rest for the day without thinking of school. Workers feel happy too because they can relax for the day and the good thing is they are compensated. Whether you are a student or worker, you should know the public holidays. If you are residing at Singapore, here’s your list of public holidays for 2013:


New Year’s Day – As in most countries, the first day of the Julian calendar is widely celebrated in the country and is the cause of much partying.

Chinese New Year – With three-fourths of the population having Chinese roots, Singapore recognizes the Chinese New Year. Determined by the lunar calendar, this year’s CNY is held on February 10 and 11.

Good Friday – Good Friday is a holiday immediately leading to Easter. It is celebrated by Christians as the day of Christ’s crucifixion. This year, it is March 29.

Labour Day – Labour Day is set aside as a day to honour the workers. It happens every May 1 every year.

Vesak Day – Vesak Day celebrates Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and attainment of nirvana. It is every May 24.

Hari Raya Puasa – This holiday comes at the end of the month-long fasting (Ramadan) by Moslems. Its feast will be on the eight of August.

National Day – National Day commemorates Singapore’s independence in 1965. It is celebrated every August 9.

Hari Raya Haji – Another Islamic holiday, the Hari Raya Haji is spent as a day of prayer after Moslems have performed their pilgrimage in Mecca. It will be on October 15.

Deepavali – This holiday is also known as the Festival of Lights, and celebrated by Sikhs and Hindus for the triumph of light over darkness. This will be held on November 2.

Christmas Day – Christmas is a Christian holiday that commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. It is held every 25th of December.
