There are many Singaporeans who are fond of cheese. Cheese may look ordinary and plain but we have to acknowledge that it can do so much. Cheese is produced around the world. In fact, it is an ancient dairy product. It is derived from pressed milk curds. There are many varieties of cheese that we can consider.


Cheeses are delicious. It is popular for its versatility – it can be consumed alone or with other dishes. There are more than three hundred varieties of cheese that boasts of different tastes, textures and packaging to meet the needs and demands of consumers. The most important attribute of cheese is its nutrition. Yes, cheeses are nutritious. It is a great source of calcium and protein. For people who want to lose weight, cheeses can help. With the help of cheese, we will feel full and gratified (since it contains protein that helps us feel satisfied after every meal).

What are the health benefits of different cheeses? Here’s a sneak:

  • Blue Cheese: Blue cheese is excellent for people who want to manage their osteoporosis and gout. It is also a good choice for people who want to maintain their healthy teeth. However, we have to be cautious because blue cheese has high saturated fats.
  • Cottage Cheese: Cottage cheese is an excellent source of selenium. Selenium is an antioxidant that can aid in preventing arthritis. Cottage cheese also contains vitamin B12 which will help in the reduction of cardiovascular diseases.
  • Cheddar Cheese: Cheddar cheese is remarkable for its sharp taste. Like other chesses, it is an excellent source of calcium and protein. The calcium can help us maintain acceptable blood pressure and strong bones.


  • Cream Cheese: Cream cheese doesn’t contain as much protein but it can be nutritious too! People with IBS should not consume more because they can experience discomfort after eating cream cheese.
  • Parmesan Cheese: Perhaps parmesan cheese is one of the most popular because it can be used in pasta and salad dishes. We have to be wary though because of its intense flavour.
  • Mozzarella Cheese: Mozzarella cheese is also popular. When we get headaches, we have to know that mozzarella is a common trigger however, mozzarella cheese is aged far less than other cheeses.

We can find these cheeses in supermarkets. We do not need to worry about its availability here in Singapore. Cheeses have their own nutritional benefits so it is imperative that we consume some. We have to remember moderation though.
